When we think of investing in collectibles, what usually comes to mind are sports memorabilia, art, vintage toys, figurines, etc. But did you know that designer fashion can also be a worthwhile investment?
Over the past few years, we’ve sold many designer fashion pieces that served as a reminder that fashion is indeed cyclical and people still value vintage fashion.
However, all designer fashion is not created equal. As with anything else you collect, there are pieces worth investing in more than others. Bear in mind that we’re talking about fashion that has the potential to keep its value or increase over time.
So you might have a love for fashion, but just like starting any collection for investment purposes, you have to do your due diligence. This involves studying the market, being aware of trends, and knowing consumer behavior. You can’t go into it thinking that you can just buy any designer piece, hold onto it for many years, and expect a return on investment.
Items from iconic brands such as Chanel, Dior, Hermes, etc. will always be recognized. These brands have always created quality pieces and will continue to have this reputation for many more years to come. Chances are the value will be consistent in the future. Do a simple search for “vintage Chanel purse” and you’ll see that they still sell for thousands of dollars.
Just because you have a timeless, iconic piece doesn’t automatically mean you’ll make money on it. If you’re going to use the designer items with plans to sell them in the future, keep in mind that they need to be maintained in exceptional condition. It’s easier to maintain a handbag than shoes because the soles of shoes can wear out.
This BAZAAR Magazine article lists Hermes handbags and the Chanel 2.55 handbag as investment pieces due to their limited availability. The most expensive handbag ever sold at auction was a Hermes Birkin bag that went for $379,261.
Collaborations between artists and fashion brands are good investments because they are usually limited editions that appeal to both the art and fashion worlds. Check out this list of the 10 most iconic art and fashion collaborations.
