Mark Kostabi is most known for his paintings of faceless figures which often comment on contemporary political, social and psychological issues, and which have visual stylistic roots in the work of Giorgio de Chirico and Fernand Leger. Beyond traditional art world exposure, Kostabi has designed album covers for Guns N Roses (Use Your Illusion) and The Ramones (Adios Amigos), Seether (Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray), Jimmy Scott (Holding Back The Years), Glint (Sound in Silence), RK: Roman Klun (Kingsway), Psychotica (Espina) and numerous products including a Swatch watch, Alessi vases, Rosenthal espresso cups, Ritzenhoff milk glasses, and a Giro d, Italia pink jersey. Retrospective exhibitions of Kostabi's paintings have been held at the Mitsukoshi Museum in Tokyo (1992) and the Art Museum of Estonia in Tallinn (1998). Kostabi,s work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the National Gallery in Washington D.C., the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome and the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands. He produced notable psychedelic blacklight posters along a number of themes including passages and images from Alice in Wonderland (an extremely important reference point back then), JRR Tolkien, Flower Power, psychedelic buddhas, vibrating peace signs, and other symbology of the period. Evert Louis van Muyden (18 July 1853, Albano Laziale Ð 27 February 1922, Orsay) was an engraver, illustrator and painter, born to Swiss parents. His brothers, Albert-Steven van Muyden (1849-1910) and Henri van Muyden (1860-1936) were also artists. At first studying with his father, the painter Jacques Alfred van Muyden (1818Ð1898), Evert later lived and studied in Geneva at the Beaux-Arts, under Carl Steffeck in Berlin and under Jean-Leon Gerome at the Paris Beaux-Arts. He worked in Rome between 1879 and 1884, concentrating on landscapes, and showing the clear influence of Corot.After 1885, he worked in Paris painting animals in the style of Antoine-Louis Barye. He virtually lived at the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris and the Zoologischer Garten in Basle, creating hundreds of drawings and engravings of plants and animals. He was sought after as an illustrator of books, providing images for Champfleurys Contes choisis (Paris, 1899) and Emil Freys Die Kriegstaten der Schweizer (Neuchatel, 1905).His engravings and book illustrations remained popular, overshadowing his occasional portraits and sculptures. - Lot 10050 Dimension: 24.5W 20H
