Chicago Marshall Fields Inspired Replica Clock
This clock was commissioned by the Illinois State Society of Washington, D.C. for the 2009 Inaugural Ball, which celebrated all things Illinois, including the inauguration of Barack Obama as president of the United States. It is a replica of the original clock. The original clock, installed in 1892, prior to the Worlds Fair, sits outside Marshall Field’s store, (now Macys) on State Street in Chicago. The clock became and continues to be a meeting place for friends and family. Legend has it that Marshall Field commissioned the clock as a meeting place, so people would not leave notes on the windows. A second clock, made of bronze, was installed at the other end of the building in 1907. The clock was also immortalized in 1945 by Norman Rockwell, with a painting known as the Clock Mender, was printed on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. That painting cemented it as an iconic status of both Marshall Fields Store and Chicago. The clock is wired but has not been turned on for some time. It has been stored in a wooden crate that measures 57” L x 70” H x 55” w. The sides that are 55” have metal handles on each sides and there is wheels on the crate for easy transport.
